Stunning Memorial Plaque dedicated to Eli Trenchard, Steward aboard S.S. Stanhope. Sadly Eli was killed in action on 17/6/1917 aged 31. S.S. Stanhope was torpedoed by UB-31 7 miles S by SW off the coast of Devon bound for Dunkirk. He was one of 22 killed that day. The plaque comes in its original cardboard wallet and also has the original envelope that would have been sent to his parents... Elizabeth and Eli Trenchard of ... 188 North Street, South Bank, yorkshire, born at Sunderland. He is commemorated with Honour at the Tower Hill Memorial.
Lovely plaque with 4 pages of research, lots more about the ship and UB-31 available on-line. Interesting item.
